Gaels Set Sights On Volleyball League Title

DAN KRUZE VOLLEYBALL
SOMERS—Last year was a bit of a rebuilding season for the Kennedy Catholic volleyball team, but with seven seniors returning, the Gaels are expecting to do better than last year’s 5-10 record.

“I think we’ll be a strong contender,” coach Ellen Casey said. “On any given night we’ll have as good a shot as anyone else.”

The team will look to last year’s All-League winners Marina Cotarelo, Cat Purdy and Natalie Candarelli to lead the way. Also returning from last year’s team are Jennifer Rescigno, Lauren Tancora, Kim Galaraga, Stephanie Suarez and Anne Baudinet.

Joining the team this year are Dana Conlin, Kariann Eliseo, Anne Abbruzzese, Lauren Kennedy and Erin Ward.

“We’ve been really focusing on the basics, and really learning an offensive system,” Casey said. “I think our strengths are going to be our middle and outside hitting.”

The Gaels will compete in League 1-C against teams from Haldane, Dover, North Salem and Pawling.

“Our number one goal is to have a winning season, and then to win the league,” Casey said. “Those are the two goals that all the girls are really striving for.”

The Gaels will open their season on Wednesday September 8, at 4:30 with a home match against Brewster.
