Mahopac Girls Turn to Balanced Attack in 2010
Last year's squad went 9-8 and lost to Ursuline in the first round of the sectionals.
Coach Ross Fumusa believes that he is heading into the season with a very balanced team that is especially strong on offense.
"We have a lot of speed on offense. They are going to be exciting to watch, " Fumusa said. "We have a balanced team this year."
The team's biggest loss from last season's roster is goalie Monica D'Ipolitto, who started in goal for three years.
"This is the first time we have had a new goalie in three years," Fumusa noted.
Mahopac's returning starters are junior forward Erin Felix, senior defender/ midfielder Mariah Villck and Donna Perruzza, a senior defender.
Other returning players are junior left midfielder Samantha Pandiscia and senior defender Caitlin Hynes.
Mahopac, who is a member of League IB, should have some tougher competition this year due to league realignment. Two teams were moved from the league while Somers and John Jay Cross River, two schools who always have strong teams, were added.
"They always have great programs," Fumusa said. "It is going to be very competitive."
Mahopac's goals are to win the league and get past the first round of the sectionals. Although that might seem like a tall order, Fumusa believes it is possible.
"I am impressed with what I have seen as far as their work ethic. I have high standards," Fumusa said. "I can kind of see how good we can be if we gell, if everything comes together."
The excitement that Fumusa has about the start of the season was evident just by listening to him speak about his team. It is clear that he believes this year's Indians squad could be a very special one.
"They are going to be exciting to watch," Fumusa said regarding the upcoming games. "I cannot wait for the games to start."
Mahopac starts its season Sept. 11 at a tournament at Yorktown High School.
