Collection Club Forms at Middle School
Members of the Collection Club put the wraps on their Jeans Drive last Friday at the Henry Wells Middle School in Brewster with advisor Joanna Biagi (far left).
Eric Gross On Friday afternoons when most middle school children can’t wait to leave their school campus and head home for weekend activities, a group of Brewster students stays late after the buses leave with guidance counselor Joanna Biagi to work on projects with the recently formed Collection Club.
The Collection Club wants to make the world a better place by assisting families in need.
Biagi said when student organizer Owen Hamm approached her about creating a club that “collects everything and anything, I loved the idea.”
Biagi, who serves as the club’s advisor, met with a group of students who decided that a “gently-used jean collection drive” would be the first endeavor. Students and faculty contributed 213 pair of jeans that were neatly folded and boxed and delivered to an organization that cleans the garments before distributing them to people in need.
Student Angel Pino, whose family recently moved from Queens to Brewster couldn’t get over the generosity of the people found in the greater Brewster area: “It seemed like no one turned down our request. The jeans kept coming and coming. People are so kind and caring in this school. I just love it here.”
The group next plans to collect and cut food coupons, which will also be distributed to families in need.
Biagi said she was truly grateful for not only her students but for the generosity from members of the community.
Other club members include Coleen DeLancy, Manuel Costales, William Ford, Danielle Castellano, Brianna Piscopo, Beth Howell, Karen Kimble, Emma Castellano, Teresa Carlin, Jess Curry, Alonzo McLemore and Rachel Tomassetti.
