’Pac Finishes Regular Season With Two Losses
MAHOPAC—All season long, the Mahopac High ice hockey team has relied on its offense to pile up the wins, but with the season winding down the offense has dropped off a bit. The Indians (13-7, 9-4) have been limited to three goals in their last three games – all loses – including Sunday’s 3-1 loss against White Plains High and Saturday’s 5-1 loss at Mamaroneck High.
“We’re a pretty offensive minded team,” coach Chris Lombardo said. “The last two games we only scored a goal in each of them. We’re kind of in a slump a little bit, hopefully that will change a bit.”
After surrendering two quick goals against White Plains, the Indians outshot the Tigers 33-25, but were unable to get more than Mike DiPasquale’s goal. Anthony Lomenzo got the start in goal for the Indians and gave up two goals on 16 shots. Anthony Barletta finished the game and stopped 8-of-9 shots.
“We barred down and we actually outplayed them for a majority of the game,” Lombardo said. “We actually didn’t play a bad game, we just didn’t finish our chances.”
The day before, the Indians traveled to Mamaroneck and once again fell behind early, this time it was four goals in a four minute span in the first.
“They came out really strong...it was their senior night, they came out fired up,” Lombardo said.
Robert Buckley scored the first goal of his varsity career for the Indians lone tally, he was assisted by Tom Kirincic. Barletta started between the pipes and gave up three goals on five shots.
“We haven’t played our best hockey, but we’ve also played well enough to put some pucks in the net,” Lombardo said. “Right now, the other team is taking advantage of their chances and we haven’t.”
With their regular season over, the Indians will be off until the opening round of the sectional playoffs on Sunday. Their opponent is set to be determined today (Thursday), but the Indians expect to be the four seed and will likely play at Brewster Ice Arena on Sunday evening.
